This week in Maths....

We've been focussing on subtraction this week.

- taking away a single-digit number from any number between 5 and 20
- taking away a single-digit number from any number between 20 and 100

We've been using a number line, our fingers and some are even starting to partition (64-6, 64-4=60, 60-2=58)!

Matter Splatter

Today we started our new Inquiry unit. We're onto Science now with a unit called 'Matter Splatter'. Inquiry is the title for the old 'theme' or 'topic'. We started with a scavenger hunt to find the pictures below and then place them below the titles, solid, liquid or gas. Check out the photos as we progressed through the stages of the first, second and final decision.

I then gave the children an opportunity to mention anything that they think could be moved. We discussed it as a class, letting the children do all the talking and then moved anything if necessary. 

Finally, just before we thought we were all in agreement, Ethan brought up the idea that some things were liquids before they became solid. We spoke about lego and the wrench. Ryan asked if we could change something...ice. It was a liquid as water however is now a solid.

We're looking forward to finding out more about how matter changes by doing some awesome experiments over the following couple of months!

Sienna's Praying Mantis

Sienna thought she'd share a praying mantis found in her garden for her Buzz Time last week.

We hope it has a nice time amongst the bush behind Rata.
