Fractions and sharing...

We've been spending a lot of time talking about how to share objects or numbers evenly by skip counting (instead of counting one by one).
Dividing lego lights by 5, sharing items into fifths. The children shared 20, 25 and 30 lego lights by skip counting in 2's or more.

Sharing in quarters.

Dividing an 8 part lego brick in 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8

Checking out how they look when they're put back together.

Which fractions are these three blocks showing? Scroll down to see the answer...

Answer:  1/3, 2/3, 1 whole.

Fractions are fun!

Check out the fun we had yesterday with lego and various bits of equipment. There were four stations around the class with a range of challenges for each group to tackle...

Show a half and a quarter in these two boxes. How could you check to see if you're accurate? The children started using a ruler, their eyes and some even thought to count them all out then halve and quarter them.

A group working out how many lego lights would be shared evenly into each part of the base. There are 5 parts to the base, what fraction is each one?

This piece had 25 lights, then they had 20 and 30. Can you share the lights evenly by skip-counting?

This piece was divided into quarters. How can you share 10 pieces by skip counting? How can you share 16, 20 and 32? How many pieces are in one quarter? How many in 3/4's?

Finished...next challenge!

Eden and Sienna worked well together making sure they were accurately skip counting in 5's.

Matariki

We had two special visitors come to visit us yesterday, Whetu and Marama. Whetu is Bobby's Mum and Marama is his Nana.
They shared their knowledge and experiences around Matariki, specifically those from the Ngati Toa iwi. Whetu and Marama serenaded us with an original song from an aunty and Tirama Tirama. We received a koha from Bobby's whanau of fruit, pens and balls. The children of Rimu Rima took one piece home yesterday for afternoon tea and this morning we'll sit down and share another piece of kai.
We can't wait to learn more about Matariki over the next week or two!

On you marks, get set, GO!

The Papakowhai School Cross Country was a lovely event. All the children put as much effort in as they could and ran right to the end. Well done Rimu Rima!
